  2.              386MAX and SUPERSTOR
  3.  
  4. This information pertains to Version 2.0 and later of SuperStor.  Follow
  5. these directions only if you wish to load the SuperStor driver into high
  6. DOS memory.  Otherwise, no special directions are necessary.  If you are
  7. using a version of SuperStor prior to 2.0, no special instructions are
  8. necessary.  The SuperStor driver does not load high in those earlier
  9. versions.  All instructions apply to both 386MAX and BlueMAX.  386MAX is
  10. used as an example in all cases.
  11.  
  12. When installing SuperStor, it is important to reserve space on your
  13. uncompressed drive for necessary files.  About 300 KB is necessary to
  14. copy the appropriate 386MAX files to the uncompressed drive.  Consider
  15. leaving enough space for other programs that may need to reside on the
  16. uncompressed drive, as well as space for a Windows SWAP file if you plan
  17. to use one.  It is usually a good idea to leave at least 1024 KB
  18. available for use on your uncompressed drive.
  19.  
  20.  
  21. IF SUPERSTOR IS INSTALLED ON YOUR SYSTEM
  22. ────────────────────────────────────────
  23.  
  24. If 386MAX is already installed, go to CHECKING THE UNCOMPRESSED DRIVE.
  25. If not, follow the directions for installation below.
  26.  
  27. INSTALL 386MAX:
  28.  
  29.      Place your 386MAX diskette into a floppy drive.
  30.  
  31.      Type  A:INSTALL   where A: represents the drive letter of your floppy drive
  32.  
  33.      Press  < ENTER >
  34.  
  35.      Follow the on-screen prompts through INSTALL.  When INSTALL asks if
  36.      you would like to run MAXIMIZE, reply NO.    Do not run MAXIMIZE at
  37.      this time.  You will be returned to the DOS prompt.
  38.  
  39. Continue with the next section.
  40.  
  41.  
  42. CHECK THE UNCOMPRESSED DRIVE
  43. ────────────────────────────
  44.  
  45. If you have 300+ KB available on your uncompressed drive, go to the next
  46. section (Copy 386MAX Files...).  If not, follow these directions to
  47. provide the necessary space.  In order for 386max (Bluemax) to load the
  48. SuperStor drivers in to high DOS you will need a bootable floppy.
  49. Insert a blank floppy into your A: drive:
  50.  
  51. Type FORMAT A: /S at the DOS prompt and press  <  ENTER  >.
  52.  
  53. When the format is complete, copy ATTRIB.EXE from your DOS directory to
  54. the boot floppy.
  55.  
  56. Reboot your computer with the formatted disk in the A: drive.
  57.  
  58. Enter through both the date and time prompt.  From the A: prompt:
  59.  
  60.       press < ENTER >
  61.       type ATTRIB -R -A -S -H C:\SSPARTSS.ADD
  62.       press < ENTER >
  63.       type REN C:\SSPARTSS.ADD SSPARTSS.SWP
  64.       press < ENTER >
  65.       type ATTRIB +R +A +S +H C:\SSPARTSS.SWP
  66.  
  67. Remove the boot disk from A:  and reboot the machine.  Your system
  68. should boot normally.
  69.  
  70. Change to your    ADDSTOR directory.  By default, this is set as C:\ADDSTOR.
  71.  
  72.        type SSUTIL
  73.        press  < ENTER >
  74.        Choose SHRINK DISK from the main menu.  When the drive letter is
  75.        requested, choose the compressed drive (typically drive c:).
  76.  
  77. This text box appears:
  78.  
  79. !Input! You may shrink the disk by up to nnnn Kb (Where nnnn is a number).
  80.  
  81.        Type 1024  (this is a suggested size;  you may choose more or less
  82.        according to your needs) and press < ENTER >
  83.  
  84. When the program states that the shrink is complete, exit the program
  85. and reboot the machine.
  86.  
  87. IF YOU NEED ADDITIONAL INFORMATION CONCERNING SHRINKING AND EXPANDING
  88. DISKS, PLEASE CONSULT YOUR SUPERSTOR MANUAL.

  90.  
  91. COPY 386MAX FILES TO THE UNCOMPRESSED DRIVE
  92. ───────────────────────────────────────────
  93.  
  94. After rebooting your system, go to your uncompressed drive.
  95.  
  96.        Type MD 386MAX;    to make a 386MAX subdirectory.
  97.        press < ENTER >
  98.        Type CD\386MAX;    to change to the 386MAX subdirectory.
  99.        Copy the following files to the newly created directory:
  100.  
  101.         386LOAD.CFG
  102.         386LOAD.SYS
  103.         386MAX.SYS
  104.         386MAX.PRO
  105.         386MAX.VXD
  106.         XLAT.COM ==>  386max version 6.0 or later
  107.  
  108. If you are using Bluemax on a PS/2 be sure to copy the proper BCF file
  109. to the uncompressed drive as well.  The necessary BCF file can be
  110. determined by viewing your BlueMAX.PRO.  Look for the following line:
  111.  
  112.   BCF=@XXXX.BCF ==> version 5.12 or earlier   or
  113.   AUTOBCF ; Compress bios using bcf @XXXX.BCF ==> version 6.0 or later
  114.  
  115. Return to your compressed drive (normally C:) and edit your CONFIG.SYS.
  116. Be sure the first 3 lines, in order, read as follows:
  117.  
  118.  DEVICE =C:\386MAX\386MAX.SYS PRO=\386MAX\386MAX.PRO ==> no drive letter
  119.  DEVICE=\SSTORDRV.SYS /NOHIGH
  120.  DEVICE=\DEVSWAP.COM
  121.  
  122. If you are using SuperStor Pro, add /NOUMB to the SSTORDRV.SYS line
  123. rather than /NOHIGH.
  124.  
  125. Copy your AUTOEXEC.BAT to your uncompressed drive.  Edit your
  126. AUTOEXEC.BAT on your compressed drive so that it contains the following
  127. line only:
  128.  
  129.   d:\autoexec.bat   (where d: indicates your uncompressed drive)
  130.  
  131. At this point reboot your system to be sure it boots as expected.
  132. Continue only if you encounter no problems.

  135. RUN MAXIMIZE
  136. ────────────
  137.  
  138. After rebooting, go to the 386MAX directory on the compressed drive and
  139. type MAXIMIZE.    When maximize asks for the letter of the boot drive,
  140. enter the letter of your uncompressed drive.  Follow the on-screen
  141. prompts until MAXIMIZE completes.
  142.  
  143. If you encounter any problems installing 386MAX, type Preinst at the
  144. command line in the 386MAX subdirectory to return your CONFIG.SYS and
  145. AUTOEXEC.BAT to the configuration prior to the installation of this
  146. version of 386MAX.  If you have problems during MAXIMIZE, Premaxim
  147. returns your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT to the configuration prior to
  148. the last pass of Maximize.
  149.

  155. 2.  AUTOEXEC.BAT file

  157. 4.  If you are experiencing a problem with Windows, SYSTEM.INI file.

  159. It is easier to resolve problems if you can be in front of your system.
